Here’s help in choosing which village to visit in France
There is no doubt, France is awash with pretty villages and there is literally a new village to explore every few kilometers but with over 32,000 to choose from, unless you are visiting for a couple of years, you cannot visit them all! How do you arrive at a shortlist and make sure that every village you see is a stunning reflection of French charm, history and tradition?
We think an association called “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France” (The Most Beautiful Villages of France) provides a very straightforward answer.
The 153 member villages share an ambition to retain their exceptional village charm and traditions and invite you to discover their history, culture and authenticity.
The villages are spread throughout 69 departments in 21 regions and a quick visit to the association’s website will give you the full selection of villages, identified in an alphabetical list, by department or on a map so planning which ones to visit is easy. Click on the entry for any village to discover the “Must Sees”, photo gallery, gastronomic highlights and contact details for the tourism office.
If you already have an outline plan in mind for your trip, try and fit in a few of these stunning villages or if you are looking for inspiration and a theme for your trip, you could just hop from village to village.
On your bike!
But remember, many of these villages are thousands of years old and their streets don’t lend themselves to exploring by car, let alone motorhomes so if you are village hopping, don’t forget to hire some bikes so you can always be sure to get right into the heart of every village and unearth it’s hidden treasures.
